Gilbert Old Fashioned: A Modern Twist on a Classic Cocktail

When it comes to cocktails, few drinks are as iconic and timeless as the Old Fashioned. This classic cocktail, with its perfect balance of sweetness, bitterness, and strength, has been a staple in bars and homes for generations. Today, we're excited to share with you a unique variation that adds a modern twist to this beloved drink: The Gilbert Old Fashioned.

Crafted with Gilbert Barrel Aged Gin, this recipe brings a new depth of flavour to the traditional Old Fashioned. The rich, oaky notes of our Gilbert Barrel Aged Gin blend seamlessly with the sweetness of the sugar and the complexity of the bitters, creating a drink that's both familiar and intriguingly different.

Ingredients:

  • 1 sugar cube or 15ml sugar syrup

  • Agostura bitters

  • A dash of water

  • Ice

  • 45ml Gilbert Barrel Aged Gin

  • A slice of orange peel

Instructions:

  1. Saturate the sugar cube / add sugar syrup: Begin by placing a sugar cube in your glass. Generously saturate it with Agostura bitters, allowing the bitters to soak into the sugar and begin dissolving. Alternatively, pour 15ml of sugar syrup and mix with bitters.

  2. Add a dash of water and muddle: Pour a small dash of water into the glass. Using a muddler, gently crush the sugar cube and bitters together until the mixture is well blended and the sugar has mostly dissolved.

  3. Add ice: Fill the glass with ice. The ice not only chills the drink but also helps to dilute it slightly, bringing all the flavours together in perfect harmony.

  4. Pour in the Gilbert Barrel Aged Gin: Measure out 45ml of Gilbert Barrel Aged Gin and pour it over the ice. The gin's unique flavour profile, enhanced by its time spent aging in barrels, adds a wonderful complexity to the cocktail.

  5. Garnish with orange peel: Finally, garnish your drink with a slice of orange peel. Squeeze the zest over the drink to release the oils, then rub the peel around the rim of the glass before dropping it in.

Enjoy

And there you have it – the Gilbert Old Fashioned, a sophisticated and refreshing take on a classic cocktail. Whether you're enjoying it at the end of a long day or serving it to guests at your next gathering, this drink is sure to impress with its rich flavours and elegant presentation.

A Few Tips for the Perfect Gilbert Old Fashioned:

  • Use quality ingredients: The key to a great cocktail is quality ingredients. Make sure to use fresh orange peel and high-quality bitters for the best results.

  • Don’t rush the muddling: Take your time when muddling the sugar and bitters. This step is crucial for ensuring that the sugar dissolves properly and the flavours meld together.

  • Experiment with ice: The type of ice you use can impact your drink's dilution and overall flavour. Larger ice cubes or spheres melt more slowly, keeping your drink cooler and less diluted.

Next time you're in the mood for an Old Fashioned, why not give the Gilbert Old Fashioned a try? It's a delightful twist on a classic that will leave you and your guests wanting more. Cheers!
